Conference Photography & Videography at PARKROYAL Parramatta
Some events stay with you long after the final speech, the last photograph, and the pack down.
Koshka Media recently photographed and filmed the conference – Silence to Power: Amplifying Voices for Justice at PARKROYAL Parramatta, an International Women’s Day signature event presented by Settlement Services International (SSI) and the Western Sydney Region Settlement Consortium (WSRSC). Bringing together more than 200 guests, the day centred on the launch of Messages from Captivity: For Ali, for Us All – Amera Ali, a powerful memoir by young Yezidi woman and ISIS survivor Amera Ali.
Amera shared words she had written on scraps of paper and hidden in her clothes at just ten years old, messages to her brother Ali, who remains missing. Her story gave the event enormous emotional weight and reminded everyone in the room that bearing witness can be the first act of justice.
Photographing and Filming Silence to Power for International Women’s Day
One of the most memorable elements of the day was a tree lit with warm lights at the heart of the room. It symbolised one of the last places Amera and her brother were together before ISIS separated them, under a fig tree. As guests left, they hung commitment leaves on its branches, each one representing a promise of action in support of refugee and migrant women’s voices. It was a thoughtful and moving detail that shaped the mood of the event from beginning to end.
A Moving Conference Honouring Refugee and Migrant Women’s Voices
Throughout the conference, another theme emerged with quiet strength: mothers. Again and again, speakers reflected on the women who carried them through hardship, often with resilience the world never properly acknowledged. That thread connected Amera’s story to the panellists’ experiences and to conversations across the room, reminding everyone that supporting refugee and migrant women means honouring past generations while building better futures for those to come.
A powerful idea also stood out across the day: the need to move beyond the phrase lived experience and recognise lived expertise. Refugee and migrant women are not simply sharing stories. They bring insight, knowledge and leadership that should be centred in decision making, policy and practice. As the speakers and panellists made clear, real inclusion means shared power and meaningful leadership at the table.
The event also highlighted the work of the organisations behind it. Settlement Services International (SSI) and the Western Sydney Region Settlement Consortium (WSRSC), together with co-hosts and members including SydWest Multicultural Services, Accessible Diversity Services Initiative (ADSI) Limited, Community Migrant Resource Centre, Western Sydney MRC, and event partner 2M Language Services, created a day that felt purposeful, respectful and deeply considered.
The venue played its part beautifully. PARKROYAL Parramatta provided a polished and welcoming setting for a conference of this scale, with modern event spaces and a central Western Sydney location well suited to professional and community focused gatherings.
