Wayside Chapel Christmas Day Street Party

There are some events where photography and video are about more than documenting what happened. They are about preserving the people, relationships and sense of community that give an organisation its purpose.

The Wayside Chapel Christmas Day Street Party in Kings Cross is one of those events.

We had the pleasure of photographing the celebration and creating a highlight video capturing the colour, energy, fun and joy of the day. This year was particularly special, with Wayside Chapel celebrating 60 years of bringing people together.

A Christmas tradition in Kings Cross

Wayside Chapel has been part of the Kings Cross community since 1964, when Reverend Ted Noffs opened its doors on Hughes Street.

From its early days, Wayside became a meeting place for people from very different parts of Sydney life. Over the decades, its work has continued to evolve around the needs of people experiencing homelessness, disadvantage and social isolation.

The Christmas celebration grew from similarly humble beginnings. What started as a small barbecue in a back lane developed into the Christmas Day Street Party, bringing the celebration out onto the streets surrounding Wayside Chapel.

On Christmas Day, Hughes Street transforms into one big celebration. Long tables fill the street as guests, volunteers, staff, supporters and locals come together for Christmas lunch. There is music, dancing, colourful outfits, festive decorations and plenty of laughter.

This celebration was even more meaningful as Wayside Chapel marked its 60th anniversary. A special celebratory cake helped mark six decades of community, connection and bringing people together in Kings Cross.

A community with no “us and them”

Wayside Chapel’s mission is to create a community with no “us and them”, and Christmas Day brings that idea to life.
People experiencing homelessness sit alongside volunteers, staff, local residents, supporters and visitors. Food is passed around the tables. Old friends catch up. New conversations begin. Volunteers move through the crowd carrying plates of Christmas lunch while music and laughter fill the street.
For people who may otherwise spend Christmas alone, the day offers something beyond a meal. It creates an opportunity to belong, connect and celebrate Christmas as part of a community.
That sense of togetherness was something we wanted both the photography and highlight video to capture.
Rather than simply recording the event, we focused on the moments that showed what the day actually felt like: the smiles, spontaneous conversations, festive costumes, dancing, volunteers helping out and people enjoying Christmas together.

Photographing and filming the Wayside Chapel Christmas celebration

Our approach to photography and video for non-profit organisations is documentary and people-focused.

At an event like the Wayside Chapel Christmas Day Street Party, some of the most meaningful moments aren’t necessarily the biggest ones.

They’re found in the interactions between people.

A volunteer carrying several plates through the crowd. Guests laughing together over lunch. Someone arriving in an unforgettable Christmas outfit. A quiet conversation at one of the tables. Friends dancing and celebrating in the sunshine.

We photographed these moments throughout the day while also documenting the scale, decorations, food, volunteers and atmosphere of the event.

Alongside the photography, we created a highlight video that brought these moments together in motion. Video adds another dimension to the story. The movement, music, laughter and energy of a celebration like this can be experienced in a way that complements the still photographs.

Together, the photography and video create a broader visual record of the day and of the people who made it happen.

Photography and video for non-profit organisations in Sydney

Photography and video for charities and non-profit organisations require a different approach from conventional corporate event coverage.

The content needs to communicate the purpose and scale of an event while still feeling natural and human.

For organisations working with vulnerable communities, dignity is particularly important. People shouldn’t become props for an organisation’s message. We prefer to document genuine interactions and give people space to be themselves rather than manufacture moments for the camera.

The resulting photography and video can then become part of an organisation’s wider visual library, supporting websites, fundraising campaigns, annual reports, social media, media releases and future events.

For more than sixty years, Wayside Chapel has been part of the social fabric of Kings Cross. The Christmas Day Street Party is just one day in that long history, but it captures something central to the organisation: people coming together who might otherwise never share the same table.

For us, that is what photography and video for community organisations should help preserve.

Not simply what an organisation does, but what it feels like to be there.

Koshka Media provides photography and video for non-profit organisations, charities and community organisations across Sydney and NSW. We document events, programs, people and stories with a natural, documentary approach, creating visual content organisations can use across communications, fundraising, campaigns, social media and annual reports.
