St Patrick’s Day Parade Sydney: Photographing One of the City’s Most Colourful Cultural Celebrations Every March, Sydney transforms into a sea of green. Streets fill with pipe bands, Irish dancers, stilt walkers, flags, music, and thousands of people celebrating Irish culture in the heart of the CBD. This year, we had the chance to photograph the Sydney St Patrick’s Day Parade. It was one of the most energetic and visually rich public events we’ve documented. The annual parade has become one of Sydney’s biggest multicultural celebrations, bringing together the Irish community and the wider public for a day of music, culture, family events, and celebration. The parade traditionally runs through the city towards Circular Quay and The Rocks, with thousands lining the streets to watch the procession. A Celebration With Deep Sydney History What many people don’t realise is that St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Sydney date back more than 200 years. Historical records mention celebrations as early as 1795, making it one of the city’s longest-running cultural traditions. Over the decades, festivities evolved from horse races and community gatherings into large-scale public parades and festivals. Today, the Sydney St Patrick’s Day Festival celebrates not only Irish heritage but also Sydney’s multicultural identity. The event includes live music, Irish dance performances, family-friendly activities, cultural displays, markets, and community groups from across NSW. Why Parade Photography Is Different Parade photography is one of the most unpredictable forms of event coverage. Unlike weddings or corporate events where moments can be planned, parades move constantly. Light changes every few minutes. Crowds shift. Performers interact spontaneously. The challenge is balancing documentary storytelling with fast-moving action. For us, photographing the St Patrick’s Day Parade meant focusing on: genuine crowd reactions movement and colour cultural details and costumes emotion and community connection wide environmental frames mixed with close candid moments The streets around Martin Place, Circular Quay, and The Rocks provided an incredible backdrop. Sydney’s sandstone architecture combined with bright greens, marching bands, and Irish flags created a visually cinematic atmosphere throughout the day. The Energy of Public Events One of the strongest parts of photographing community festivals is capturing shared emotion. Public events like this bring together people from completely different backgrounds around a common celebration. This year’s parade featured hundreds of marchers including pipe bands, Irish dancers, community groups, children’s performers, and cultural organisations. Organisers described the event as a celebration of Irish culture and community spirit, with thousands expected to attend throughout the festival weekend. As photographers, these events are full of fleeting moments: kids waving flags from their parents’ shoulders performers laughing between routines strangers dancing together in the crowd quiet moments behind the scenes before the parade begins Those are the moments that tell the real story of an event. Why Professional Coverage Matters for Festivals & Parades Large public events happen once. Good photography helps organisers, sponsors, tourism boards, cultural organisations, and media teams continue telling the story long after the event ends. Professional parade photography can be used for: future event promotion tourism campaigns media and press releases sponsor partnerships social media marketing archival documentation community storytelling Strong visual coverage also helps preserve cultural history. Events like the Sydney St Patrick’s Day Parade are part of the city’s evolving identity and deserve to be documented properly. Photographing Culture, Community & Connection At Koshka Media, we approach event photography with a documentary mindset. We’re interested in atmosphere as much as action. Real moments over staged ones. The St Patrick’s Day Parade was a reminder of how powerful public celebrations can be, especially in a city as multicultural as Sydney. If you’re organising a festival, parade, cultural event, community celebration, or public activation, we’d love to help document it in a way that feels authentic, energetic, and timeless. Community Event Photography Sydney – Street Play 2023 in Wollstonecraft
Community Event Photography Sydney Street Play 2023 in Wollstonecraft In 2023, Koshka Media had the opportunity to photograph and film one of the most vibrant community events we’ve experienced in Sydney – Street Play 2023 in Wollstonecraft, presented by North Sydney Council. Held on Selwyn Street, the event transformed a quiet neighbourhood road into a lively public space filled with families, music, games, bikes, conversations and connection. As a team specialising in community event photography in Sydney, these are the moments we love capturing most: genuine interactions, spontaneous laughter and the energy that comes from people simply enjoying being together. A Street Turned Into a Community Celebration For one weekend, cars made way for people. Children played freely on the street, neighbours gathered outside their homes, and families spent the afternoon enjoying activities designed for all ages. The atmosphere throughout the day felt warm, relaxed and welcoming. After years of isolation during the COVID period, events like this became more important than ever. You could genuinely feel how much the community appreciated having a safe and vibrant outdoor space to reconnect with others again. From our perspective behind the camera, the event had an authenticity that made documenting it incredibly rewarding. There was no need to manufacture moments – the smiles, conversations and excitement were happening naturally everywhere we looked. Free Ice Cream, Lawn Games and Bike Maintenance One of the highlights of the day was the free ice cream provided by Gelateria Dolce Bacio, which quickly became a favourite stop for both kids and adults. The queue never seemed to end, and it added a fun summer festival atmosphere to the afternoon. Families also gathered around the oversized lawn games presented by Garden Games. Giant games brought strangers together, sparked friendly competition and created some of the most joyful moments of the event. Another fantastic initiative was the free bike maintenance service offered by Pedal Set Go. It encouraged locals to ride to the event while also supporting active and sustainable transport within the community. These small details made a huge difference. The event felt thoughtful, inclusive and genuinely designed around creating positive experiences for local residents. Supporting Community Connection After COVID What stood out most to us was how community-focused the entire event felt. North Sydney Council deserves real praise for investing in initiatives that bring people together in meaningful ways. During and after COVID, many communities experienced long periods of isolation and disconnection. Events like Street Play helped create opportunities for people to rebuild social connections, spend time outdoors and feel part of their neighbourhood again. As photographers and filmmakers, we often see firsthand how important these shared experiences are. Children gain confidence playing outdoors, parents connect with neighbours, and local streets become places people actually want to spend time in together. Street Play 2023 was more than just an event, it felt like a reminder of how valuable community spaces and local gatherings can be. Capturing Community Events Across Sydney At Koshka Media, we love documenting events that bring people together. From council activations and cultural festivals to local markets and family-friendly public events, our goal is always to capture genuine moments and tell the story of the community behind the event. Street Play 2023 in Wollstonecraft was a perfect example of what happens when thoughtful planning, local support and community spirit all come together for a wonderful weekend experience. Hunters Hill ANZAC March & Memorial Service 2026
Hunters Hill ANZAC March & Memorial Service 2026 Event Photography On April 23rd, the Hunters Hill community gathered for the annual ANZAC March and Memorial Service – an evening of remembrance, reflection, and respect for Australian service personnel past and present. Hosted by Hunter’s Hill Council together with the Hunters Hill RSL Sub-Branch, the commemorations began at the RSL Memorial Wall before the community march proceeded through Alexandra Street toward Hunters Hill Town Hall for the evening service. The service brought together veterans, families, local residents and politicians, scouts, cadets, and community organisations in a shared moment of remembrance. A Community United in Remembrance The evening opened with an Acknowledgement of Country recognising the Wallumata People and honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service personnel. Throughout the service, prayers for peace, scripture readings, wreath laying, and the traditional recitation of The Ode created moments of quiet reflection. As the piper played and the flag was lowered to half-mast, the atmosphere across the memorial wall became deeply moving. The familiar words: “At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.” were spoken collectively by the crowd before the response echoed back: “We will remember them. Lest we forget.” Photographing the ANZAC Service Photographing commemorative events such as ANZAC services requires sensitivity, patience, and respect for the significance of the occasion. Rather than focusing only on formal moments, we aimed to document the emotion and atmosphere of the evening – quiet reflection, veterans standing proudly in uniform, wreaths, community participation, and the solemnity of the march itself. These events are important historical and community records, preserving moments of remembrance for future generations. The Hunters Hill March Following the wreath-laying ceremony, the ANZAC march moved through Hunters Hill accompanied by pipe band music and community members walking together toward Town Hall. The evening concluded with blessings for peace and remembrance, honouring those who served and sacrificed. Hunter’s Hill Council described the event as a community commemoration honouring those who served, those currently serving, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
